Cloudsteading

Self-hosted image hosting on Cloudflare R2

3 open-source image hosts on Cloudsteading store uploads in Cloudflare R2: CloudFlare ImgBed, roim-picx and CattoPic. R2 keeps the files and charges nothing for egress, so popular images do not raise the bill the way bandwidth does elsewhere. A Worker or Pages Function takes the uploads, and D1 or KV keeps the index of images.

How each one is built

Every project uses R2 and is mapped to Imgur. The rest of its Cloudflare setup, and its license, decide how much work it is to run.

Frequently asked

Is R2 cheaper than Imgur or Cloudinary for hosting images?+

R2 bills for storage and operations, not bandwidth: there are no egress fees, and the free tier includes 10 GB of storage a month. Cloudinary meters bandwidth and transformations, so image-heavy sites often pay less on R2. In exchange, resizing and format conversion become your job, or Cloudflare Images' job.

Do I need my domain on Cloudflare?+

To serve R2 files from your own domain, yes: the domain must use Cloudflare. Without one, R2 offers an r2.dev address, which is rate limited and meant for testing rather than a public image host.

What else do these projects use besides R2?+

Counting the 3 projects listed here: D1 (3), Workers (3), Images (2), KV (2), Pages (1), Queues (1). Each repository's Wrangler config shows exactly which bindings it needs.
