Docusaurus vs Mintlify

Docusaurus is a strong candidate when a React team wants to own versioned documentation. Mintlify is worth evaluating when managed publishing matters more than maintaining a documentation stack. Compare the authoring workflow and ongoing work before comparing bills.

Which documentation job are you buying?

Our recommendation is to evaluate Docusaurus when React customization and documentation for multiple releases are central to the job. Evaluate Mintlify when your priority is a publishing platform your team can use without owning the site framework. This is an assessment of their documented workflows, not a benchmark or a completed migration.

Decision Docusaurus Mintlify
Authoring Markdown and MDX with React customization Managed editor and Git synchronization
Hosting Build static files and choose the host Hosted platform under the selected plan
Release documentation Documented content and sidebar versioning Validate the version workflow your team needs
API reference Evaluate the plugins and components you will maintain API playground listed in the plan comparison
Budget Hosting, dependencies, services and engineering time Free Starter or paid plans; check usage costs separately

The Docusaurus introduction describes a React-based static site generator with MDX, plugins and localization. That is useful control for a development team; it is also a framework your team must keep healthy. Before choosing it, have the person who will operate the site review the required plugins and build process.

Versioning is a maintenance decision

Docusaurus versioning creates separate content and sidebar files for a release. Readers can access the corresponding published routes, and corrections to an old version belong in that version's files.

For a team supporting two API releases, our suggested pilot is to publish one guide for each release and apply a correction to both. Check how reviewers distinguish current, next and older documentation. A version picker alone does not settle whether the workflow is manageable. Keep only the versions readers still need, and assign an owner for corrections across releases.

What a Cloudflare deployment actually replaces

The Docusaurus deployment guide documents building into a build directory and links both Cloudflare Workers and Pages deployment paths. The output can be served as static assets rather than a continuously running application server.

Cloudflare's billing documentation says requests served directly as static assets are free and unlimited, with no additional asset storage charge. Requests invoking a Worker follow Workers billing. In our assessment, this makes static documentation a practical low-cost hosting candidate. Domains, search providers, CI and maintenance still belong in the budget; authentication or dynamic features need their own design.

Mintlify also offers a free plan. Use the Mintlify pricing guide to compare the actual features you need before assuming a move saves money. A hosting invoice is only one part of the decision.

A migration pilot that exposes the differences

Choose a normal guide, a page with custom MDX components and an API reference page. Rebuild them before migrating the rest of the site. Check code examples, search results, image paths and direct links to headings. Then test old URLs, trailing slashes and redirects on the intended host.

Have both a developer and a documentation contributor make a change. Observe who fixes a failed build and who can restore a working version. Those checks are our proposed acceptance criteria; we have not run them for your site.

Common questions

Can Docusaurus run for free on Cloudflare?

A static Docusaurus build can use Cloudflare Workers Static Assets. Direct static asset requests are free and unlimited under the current billing documentation; Worker execution and extra services have separate limits and costs.

Is Docusaurus a drop-in Mintlify replacement?

No. Shared Markdown and MDX concepts do not make components, navigation, API pages or search interchangeable. Test representative pages and redirects before moving a production domain.

Should I choose Docusaurus for documentation versioning?

Consider it when readers need documentation for multiple supported releases. Its documented versioning workflow copies content and sidebars into versioned directories. Decide who will maintain those versions before adopting it.
