Starlight vs Mintlify

Starlight is a useful option for a team that wants an Astro documentation site with local content and built-in static search. Mintlify is worth evaluating when managed authoring, publishing and platform services are the priority. Choose around the workflow you can maintain.

When Starlight is worth evaluating

Our recommendation is to start with Starlight when the main job is publishing written guides and your team is comfortable maintaining an Astro project. It offers a documentation framework you can configure around your own content. Start with Mintlify when your team wants a managed publishing platform and has little appetite for maintaining another build pipeline.

This comparison uses the tools' documentation. It does not establish a successful migration, an equivalent AI assistant or a performance advantage.

Decision Starlight Mintlify
Content Markdown and MDX in an Astro project Managed authoring with an editor and Git sync
Default search Pagefind full-text search for static content Search listed in current plans
Deployment Build and host your site Managed publishing platform
AI and API workflows Evaluate additional tools and integrations Plan-scoped platform capabilities
Ongoing work Own dependencies, builds and customization Evaluate subscription, usage and service terms

Search without another service to operate

Starlight's search guide documents Pagefind as its default full-text search. Search is enabled without configuration after you build and deploy. You can exclude pages or parts of a page from the index. The guide also describes alternative providers, including the official Algolia DocSearch integration.

In our assessment, this is a good starting point for public guides whose search needs fit a static index. It is not evidence of answer generation or parity with a managed AI system. Try the questions readers actually bring to your documentation: product names, error codes, partial phrases and older terminology. Review the results before choosing a provider.

Authoring and component compatibility

Starlight's authoring guide covers Markdown, frontmatter, images, headings and MDX customization. The important migration question is how your current content uses components. A shared file extension does not make one platform's imports or configuration valid in another.

Our proposed pilot includes one plain guide, a page containing custom components and a page with substantial code examples. Check navigation, image resolution, heading links and search on the built output. Ask the actual contributors to make an edit and review the preview. That exposes workflow friction before you move hundreds of pages.

Cloudflare hosting and the complete cost

Astro's Cloudflare guide documents static and on-demand deployments, and recommends Workers for new Cloudflare projects. Choose the static path when it meets the site's requirements. An on-demand application has a different execution and billing model.

Cloudflare's asset billing makes direct static asset requests free and unlimited. Requests invoking Worker code follow Workers pricing. This supports a low-cost static documentation path; it does not make every search, authentication or AI integration free.

Mintlify's Starter plan is free too. Read the Mintlify pricing breakdown, then list which paid capabilities you need. Our recommendation is to account for the person maintaining builds and dependencies alongside any infrastructure bill.

What to compare next

For documentation tied to multiple software releases, read Docusaurus vs Mintlify and evaluate the versioning workflow. For MDX with OpenAPI reference pages, inspect Heyo Docs, including its source, license and reviewed Cloudflare configuration. Its screenshot represents that repository, not Starlight.

The Mintlify alternatives shortlist helps choose among those approaches. Once you have a candidate, use the Cloudflare self-hosting guide to plan deployment checks and a reversible cutover.

Common questions

Does Starlight need a paid search service?

Its default full-text search uses Pagefind and requires no configuration. Alternative providers are available, but they have their own setup and service terms.

Can Starlight documentation be hosted for free?

A static build can use Cloudflare Workers Static Assets, where direct asset requests are free and unlimited under current billing rules. Dynamic Worker requests, external services, domains and maintenance are separate.

Can I move Mintlify MDX into Starlight unchanged?

Do not assume that. Starlight supports Markdown and MDX through Astro, but you must review imported components, configuration, navigation and any API reference or AI features your site uses.
