Heyo Docs vs Mintlify

Heyo Docs is a toolkit you can run and maintain. Mintlify is a managed documentation platform. Both are worth evaluating for developer docs; the decision turns on how much of the publishing, search and team workflow you want to operate yourself.

Compare the job you need done

This comparison is based on a pinned Heyo Docs source review and current Mintlify documentation. It is not a performance benchmark or a report of a completed migration.

Where Heyo Docs makes sense

Our recommendation is to evaluate Heyo Docs when the main requirement is a documentation site with MDX guides, navigation, search and API reference pages, and a developer can own the deployment. You can inspect the source rather than accept a generated description: the project page includes the full author README and linked configuration evidence.

Choosing a framework is part of setup. The repository’s Astro, Next.js and React Router templates are separate paths; deploying every template is unnecessary. Verify the path that matches your team’s skills and existing application.

Where Mintlify makes sense

Our recommendation is to evaluate Mintlify when your team wants the publishing platform operated for it. Consider the authoring experience, access requirements, AI workflow and service terms together, rather than comparing only a hosting invoice. Use the pricing guide to separate the subscription from usage charges.

If nobody is accountable for keeping the self-hosted documentation healthy, a smaller hosting bill can create a larger operational problem.

What you must validate in a migration

An MDX file extension does not guarantee that every component works in both systems. Build a pilot with one ordinary guide, one page with custom components and one OpenAPI reference page. Check the navigation, code examples, image paths, search results and mobile layout.

Then test the publishing workflow: who can merge changes, how previews are reviewed, what happens when a build fails, and how a release can be rolled back. Keep important URLs or document redirects before moving the domain. Those checks establish whether the alternative fits your actual site.

Our decision rule

Choose around ownership and workflow. A source-controlled site is useful when your team can maintain it; managed documentation is useful when that maintenance would distract from the product. If neither seems right, compare Starlight, Docusaurus and VitePress before committing to a framework.

Common questions

Is Heyo Docs a complete Mintlify replacement?

We have evidence for an overlapping MDX, navigation, search and OpenAPI documentation workflow. We have not established full platform parity, a production migration, or equivalent enterprise administration.

Can Heyo Docs run on Cloudflare?

Its reviewed repository includes Cloudflare deployment templates for Astro, Next.js and React Router. Choose one framework and inspect its generated adapter. Source review does not prove a fresh deployment succeeds unchanged.

Who should choose managed documentation?

In our assessment, a team without a clear owner for dependency updates, deployment failures and documentation infrastructure should evaluate a managed service first.

Sources and review

Recommendations are Cloudsteading’s editorial assessment. Repository review establishes documented capabilities; it does not prove a fresh deployment or complete feature parity. Prices and platform limits can change.
