VitePress vs Mintlify

VitePress is worth evaluating for a team that wants Markdown documentation with Vue components and control over its build. Mintlify is worth evaluating when managed publishing and plan-based platform features matter more than operating the documentation stack.

Choose around the components your team already maintains

Our recommendation is to evaluate VitePress when your contributors are comfortable working in Git and your developers already maintain Vue components. It can give that team a familiar way to build interactive documentation. Evaluate Mintlify when you prefer a managed publishing workflow and want to assess its editor, AI tools and access features together.

This is an editorial assessment of documented capabilities. We have not migrated a Mintlify site to VitePress or measured comparative performance.

Decision VitePress Mintlify
Content and components Markdown with Vue customization Managed documentation and platform components
Search Configure local MiniSearch or another supported provider Search included in the current plan matrix
Publishing Maintain the project, build and hosting configuration Evaluate the managed platform and plan limits
AI workflow Requires an additional implementation and cost review Credit-powered features on Pro and Enterprise
Ownership and ongoing work Own dependency updates and build failures Budget subscription, usage and service terms

Converting MDX means reviewing interactive pages

VitePress processes Markdown pages as Vue components. That makes Vue examples and interactive documentation possible, but does not make React-based MDX portable. Audit imports, tabs, callouts and custom examples before estimating a move.

For a pilot, select a plain guide, a page with several interactive components and an API reference page. Make a list of everything that renders through a platform component. Convert one example of each, then ask a contributor to edit and preview it. A successful plain Markdown page alone will miss the expensive part of many migrations.

Check browser-only code against the production build too. Content that works in a development browser can still fail during prerendering. Keep the old site available until the representative pages build and render correctly.

Local search is a specific option to test

The default theme's search documentation describes a local full-text provider using MiniSearch. It is a configurable option, rather than an AI assistant. An Algolia integration is also documented.

Our suggested search review starts with the questions people ask your support team. Try a product name, an exact error code, a partial command and a term from an older release. Check whether the result points to the relevant section and whether the snippet helps the reader. This is a proposed evaluation method, not a reported search benchmark.

Cloudflare deployment and costs

VitePress's deployment guide includes Cloudflare Pages settings. For its documented docs directory layout, the build command is npm run docs:build and the output directory is docs/.vitepress/dist. Confirm your own project layout before copying those values. Preview the production output and test direct visits to nested pages, not only navigation from the homepage.

A generated static site can also use Workers Static Assets. Cloudflare's current billing rules make direct asset requests free and unlimited; requests that invoke Worker code follow Workers pricing. This gives public static documentation a low-cost hosting path. Add domains, build maintenance and any dynamic services to the budget.

Mintlify's Starter plan is free as well. Use the Mintlify pricing guide and calculator to check whether you need paid features. Compare the actual required workflow before assuming self-hosting reduces total costs.

Preserve the routes people already use

Before a cutover, create a route map from old pages to their replacements. Check heading anchors, relative images, sidebar navigation and links in SDK error messages. Decide how redirects will run on the chosen host. Search traffic and bookmarked support links make this more than a theme change.

For React documentation tied to multiple releases, compare Docusaurus. For Astro documentation, compare Starlight. For an MDX and OpenAPI toolkit, inspect Heyo Docs: its catalog entry includes the original README, license, genuine image and reviewed Cloudflare configuration. The sidebar image on this page belongs to Heyo Docs.

The Mintlify alternatives shortlist compares the four options together. Use the self-hosting guide to plan deployment checks once you have chosen a candidate.

Common questions

Can VitePress run on Cloudflare without a database?

A static VitePress documentation build can be served without a database. Authentication, an AI assistant, custom server functions or external integrations need a separate design and cost review.

Does VitePress need Algolia for search?

No. Its default theme supports an optional local full-text search provider using MiniSearch. Configure the local provider and test the generated index. Algolia DocSearch is another supported option with separate eligibility and service terms.

Is Mintlify MDX compatible with VitePress?

Do not assume that. VitePress uses Markdown with Vue components. React imports and Mintlify-specific components require conversion, and navigation, API reference pages and redirects need their own review.
