5 options to evaluate. This is a fit assessment, not a benchmark or proof of feature parity.
Heyo Docs
MDX, navigation, search and OpenAPI pages across React Router, Next.js and Astro.
Choose one generated framework and review its Cloudflare adapter. A fresh installation and migration have not been tested.
Inspect README, license & infrastructure →Starlight
Astro documentation with Markdown, MDX and built-in static search.
Pilot custom components and any API or versioning additions. This is a framework option, not an imported catalog project.
Compare Starlight with Mintlify →Docusaurus
React and MDX documentation with a documented release-versioning workflow.
Versioned copies add build and maintenance work. Review plugins, API reference generation and your search choice.
Compare Docusaurus with Mintlify →VitePress
Markdown documentation with Vue components and a documented Cloudflare Pages deployment path.
React MDX components need conversion. Test any API reference or versioning extensions separately.
Compare VitePress with Mintlify →Fumadocs
Documentation inside a React application, with a configurable OpenAPI integration.
Choose static output or a server deployment. Next.js on Cloudflare uses OpenNext; the Next.js Edge runtime is unsupported.
Compare Fumadocs with Mintlify →All five are open-source tooling. Static asset requests and dynamic execution have different Cloudflare billing rules. Budget for maintenance, domains and added services. Compare Mintlify plans and total costs →
Five Mintlify alternatives: choose by workflow
Use the alternative finder to narrow the shortlist by framework, OpenAPI reference pages or release versioning. When the sources do not establish a match, it shows the evidence gap and what to investigate.
This is a shortlist for teams that want to own a documentation site. Heyo Docs has a complete Cloudsteading project entry with a pinned README, actual product image, license and configuration review. The other four are documented framework options, not additional apps we have deployed or imported into the catalog. The fit recommendations below are our assessment, not a benchmark ranking.
| Alternative | Best fit in our assessment | Authoring model | What to evaluate before switching |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heyo Docs | MDX docs with OpenAPI reference pages | React Router, Next.js or Astro toolkit | Pick one framework; review its generated Cloudflare adapter and API components |
| Fumadocs | Docs integrated into an existing React application | React framework and configurable documentation components | Choose static export or a server deployment; Next.js on Cloudflare uses OpenNext |
| Starlight | A focused documentation site in the Astro ecosystem | Markdown and MDX | Rework custom components and check search requirements |
| Docusaurus | A React team with versioned documentation | Markdown, MDX and React | Decide how versions, plugins and API reference pages will work |
| VitePress | Markdown documentation with Vue components | Markdown and Vue | Convert React-based MDX components and verify navigation |
Heyo Docs: begin with the workflow already in the catalog
For the combination of MDX and API reference documentation, Heyo Docs is our first candidate to investigate. Its author documents navigation, search and OpenAPI pages. The creator supports several frameworks and includes Cloudflare deployment templates. Those are choices, rather than three services you must run together.
The project page shows the real upstream interface, original README, MIT license and pinned Wrangler files. Its source review supports a deployment path; we have not completed a fresh installation or a Mintlify migration test.
Starlight: an Astro documentation framework
Starlight provides documentation navigation, search and Markdown/MDX support. Our recommendation is to consider it when the site is mainly written guides and you already use Astro. Follow Astro’s Cloudflare deployment guide and choose static output or server rendering to match your actual requirements.
Read Starlight vs Mintlify for the built-in search, authoring and hosting tradeoffs.
Docusaurus: consider it for versioned React documentation
Docusaurus supports React, MDX, documentation versioning and localization. That makes it worth evaluating when documentation releases track product releases. Its deployment guide links Cloudflare Workers and Pages options. A generated site still needs your content structure, component compatibility and plugins reviewed.
Read Docusaurus vs Mintlify for a versioning pilot, Cloudflare deployment scope and the work to budget before switching.
VitePress: consider it for Markdown and Vue
VitePress generates documentation from Markdown and allows Vue customization. Its deployment guide documents Cloudflare Pages settings. It is a sensible candidate for a Vue team; moving React-flavored MDX into that ecosystem requires deliberate conversion.
Read VitePress vs Mintlify for local search, component conversion and a route-preserving migration pilot.
Fumadocs: documentation inside your React app
Evaluate Fumadocs when you want to own the documentation UI and integrate it into a React application. Its deployment guide explicitly directs Next.js deployments on Cloudflare to OpenNext and says the Next.js Edge runtime is unsupported. A fully static build is another documented option, with search configured for static output.
Read Fumadocs vs Mintlify for the license, API integration, search and hosting decisions. We have reviewed those documents, not completed a Fumadocs installation or migration.
What does a free Mintlify alternative actually cost?
Choosing a host as well as a framework? Mintlify vs Cloudflare Pages separates the documentation platform from free static hosting, including build limits, previews and redirect behavior.
Separate the code license from the hosting and the publishing service. Heyo Docs has MIT-licensed source; you maintain the resulting application. Mintlify Starter is a managed free plan, with five editor seats on the current pricing page.
Cloudflare's billing rules make requests served directly as static assets free and unlimited. Requests that execute Worker code use Workers billing. For a static documentation site, our recommendation is to generate pages and a browser-search index at build time where the chosen framework supports it. Authentication, server-side search and AI can introduce runtime or provider costs.
| Your requirement | First option to evaluate | Budget separately |
|---|---|---|
| Managed docs with no subscription | Mintlify Starter | Features beyond Starter and your custom domain |
| Own MDX and API reference code | Heyo Docs or Fumadocs | Adapter configuration, API behavior and maintenance |
| Static guides with built-in search | Starlight | Build pipeline, updates and any added dynamic services |
| React docs tied to product releases | Docusaurus | Version upkeep, plugins and the search choice |
| Markdown in a Vue project | VitePress | Component conversion and publishing workflow |
Use the Mintlify pricing calculator if you are comparing a paid subscription. A lower infrastructure bill alone does not establish equivalent functionality or total savings.
Open-source software versus Mintlify's OSS program
If you prefer managed hosting, compare Mintlify vs Fern, Mintlify vs ReadMe and Mintlify vs GitBook. These are separate vendor services with their own free-plan limits and Enterprise arrangements; they are not additional free Cloudflare repositories.
Mintlify's OSS program offers free Pro to qualifying non-commercial open-source projects through an application. Its criteria exclude venture-backed or revenue-funded projects and those owned or primarily maintained by a for-profit company. Confirm acceptance and usage terms before budgeting around it.
That program is a route to a managed service. If your requirement is to run and modify the documentation code in your own Cloudflare account, evaluate the frameworks above and their licenses instead. Read our MIT license explainer for what the Heyo Docs license permits and what notices you retain.
When staying with Mintlify makes sense
If you are comparing managed platforms first, read Mintlify vs GitBook for authoring, API reference workflows, free-plan differences and site-versus-user billing. Mintlify vs ReadMe compares the current plans, contributor allowances and bidirectional Git workflow.
Moving hosts does not automatically improve your documentation. If your team values managed publishing and wants to avoid operating its own documentation stack, first evaluate Mintlify’s free Starter plan. Use our Mintlify pricing guide to check when paid features matter.
Eligible startups can also apply for a temporary six-month Pro offer. Our startup pricing section explains the published criteria and separates it from Starter and the OSS program.
Self-hosting is most compelling when someone can own dependency updates, build failures, redirects, search and the publishing workflow. The hosting bill can be small while the engineering time is substantial.
A practical migration pilot
Use the Mintlify migration guide for a file and URL inventory, component conversion, API reference checks and redirect examples. It includes an editable CSV to track the move.
- Inventory your current routes, custom components, OpenAPI files, navigation and search behavior.
- Rebuild a guide, a component-heavy page and an API reference page in the candidate framework.
- Compare the published output on desktop and mobile, including search and code examples.
- Preserve important URLs or write redirects before changing the domain.
- Test previews and rollback, then expand the migration only after the pilot works.
Our Heyo Docs vs Mintlify comparison covers the ownership tradeoff. The Cloudflare self-hosting guide helps choose and inspect the deployment path.
Common questions
What is a free Mintlify alternative?
Heyo Docs, Fumadocs, Starlight, Docusaurus and VitePress offer open-source documentation tooling. Direct Cloudflare static asset requests are free and unlimited under current billing rules. Dynamic execution, third-party services, domains and maintenance need a separate budget. Mintlify also offers free Starter.
Which Mintlify alternative is closest to an MDX and OpenAPI workflow?
Start by evaluating Heyo Docs. Its reviewed source documents MDX content, navigation, search and OpenAPI reference pages, plus Cloudflare deployment templates. That overlap does not establish feature parity or a tested migration.
Can I copy my Mintlify site into another tool unchanged?
Do not assume that. Audit MDX components, configuration, navigation, API pages, redirects and search behavior. Pilot a representative group of pages before moving your domain.
